Out&About | Fishes, food, and the district

taking selfies to a whole other level at the nat aq
So we said we were going to visit the Folklife Festival last week, and we went last Saturday... sort of (wow this is a week late oops). To be honest, we probably should've given it more of a chance, but walking in, there weren't really any extravagant shows or displays we were expecting, more like white tents everywhere. We can't really give a fair review of the festival because we didn't really try anything out. From a quick glance around we saw a lot of dancing and singing, but one thing that really captured our eyes was the huge "Chicken and Waffles" sign. (We'll save the more adventurous exotic stuff for next time, promise)

chicken - yes
waffles - yes
chicken & waffles - hyfr
We ordered a chicken and waffles classic, which was literally waffles with powdered sugar and chicken on top. We paired it with some savory BBQ sauce and syrup. Fried chicken dipped in maple syrup and waffles dipped in BBQ sauce are a lot better than you would expect!!

tastiest food on the block

We decided to explore more of DC since the outdoor festival was way too hot for our tastes. We looked for doissants (doissants!!! aka cronuts) but couldn't find any, so we settled on a Shake Shack about 2 miles away.

Surprise surprise!! We spotted Nat Aq en route to shake shack.

nat aq!!
We made an impulsive decision to go since we won memberships a couple months ago. We hadn't planned to visit so we didn't bring our cards, but we assumed that we could ask the front desk to look us up in the system... except the guy working there couldn't. We left, a little (ok very) pissed and kept walking to the Shack.

Dorothy got a black and white shake and Yuki got a strawberry shake.

Dorothy: A black and white shake is basically vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup. I thought it tasted a lot like cookies n cream. I finished it within two blocks of leaving Shake Shack. I'd give it a 4/5 because the only problem I'd say is just that it's really thick and ends up making you more thirsty.

Yuki: I was really thirsty after the walk so I really just wanted something to quench my thirst, and looking back a milkshake was probably a bad idea. The strawberry shake was good, but it was really thick and I found it a little too cloying for my tastes. Was left 10x thirstier than before. I can totally see this as ice cream though. I'll give it a 3.6/5.

Final rating: 7.6/10

someday i wanna live just like these fishes (except not in a tank)
We found our Aquarium membership ID numbers in our emails, so we went back. This time they found our names in the system and let us in.

Can we just say... thank goodness we didn't pay the $10 to get in the first time because the aquarium was really lame. It was one level (it is the basement of a government building) and the actual exhibit (there's only one) was not much bigger than one floor of an average house. There were still a lot of cool fish though.

soooo pretty

I think it's an unwritten rule in our friendship that whenever we go places we have to take stupid pictures.

pondering as per usual
danger danger
shots shots shots shots (j/k) (not rlly)

This day could have been more fun if we planned our trip better....... on the bright side we probably burned 0345879434 calories from all the walking!!1

We're taking a break from DC for a while........ too much........ walking..........
  • Have you guys had Shake Shack experiences before? What are your favorite things to order?
  • What are some cool places to eat in DC? Or just hip chain stores in general?
  • HAVE YOU TRIED CRONUTS/DOISSANTS?

Till next time,

P.S. about the cronuts/doissants we are considering embarking on a quest to find the perfect cronut/doissant recipe!! it's going tobe a party

  1. Dorothy and Yuki, thanks so much for stopping by the Shack to cool off with some shakes. Have you tried our frozen custard in a cup or cone? We have a rotating monthly calendar (this month's had flavors like S'mores and Blackberry Buttermilk: http://www.shakeshack.com/2012/01/01/custard-calendar/)

Our team can't wait to see you again soon!
